Myoung Ho Lee is a student, lecturer and photographer based in Seoul, Korea. He attracted international acclaim in 2007 with his series Tree.

Myoung Ho Lee creates elaborate, unlikely large-scale temporary installations but his constructions are built for the purpose of photographing the results.

The concept of his Tree series of photographs is rather simple but the impact generates intriguing questions about representation, reality, environment and seeing. He isolates each tree from immediate environment by an immense white canvas backdrop, creating in effect “a temporary monumental door art installation” (Jim Casper).

This performance is repeated with different kinds of trees in different locations, his installation is created to simplify and intensify vision, converting ordinary landscape, something we would ignore or not notice, into “objects of meditation”.

His work also reminds of studio photography, removing the subject from any context. Richard Avedon once said: “I always prefer to work in a studio. It isolates people from their environment. They become in a sense … symbolic of themselves.”

“But Myoung Ho’s background is more than just a neutral background to clarify vision. The strong geometric form of the background creates a stark and vibrant graphic shape in the middle of the photo.” (Jim Casper) Plus in Myoung Ho unlike Avedon reveals the real background – sky, hills, other trees, etc. Also he introduces playful elements like the colorful balloons that give a sense of fairy tail.

His work could definitely not be done with help of Photoshop or digital trickery. “Garry Winogrand said ‘I photograph to see how things look photographed. And I think this is a part of what drive photographers like Myoung Ho Lee to go to so much trouble to create a photograph that is easy to see in the mind, but much more difficult, and more powerful, when recorded as an actual fact by the camera”. (Jim Casper)
